With the automaker’s new naming strategy, the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class becomes the GLC-Class. Along with the new name, the compact SUV gets a high-performance AMG variant dubbed the Mercedes-AMG GLC63, which has just been spotted testing.
Although the prototype is heavily camouflaged, we can see the headlights more resemble those on the C-Class sedan and the lower front fascia has round air inlets at each corner. A black grille sits prominently up front. From the side, the new GLC-Class has a less upright profile compared to the current GLK-Class. Around back, revised taillights, rear fascia, and reshaped exhaust tips can be made out.
New to the lineup will be an AMG variant. The GLC63 AMG will feature a version of the new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 found in the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 and AMG GT. In those models, the engine makes 456-503 hp and 443-516 lb-ft of torque. Along with the high-performance engine; the GLC63 AMG will feature an AMG body kit, sportier suspension, larger brakes, and more aggressive tires.
The current GLK-Class is powered by either a 2.1-liter BlueTec turbodiesel four-cylinder with 190 hp and 369 lb-ft or a 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 with 302 hp and 273 lb-ft. While the BlueTec engine could carry over, the new GLC-Class will likely be powered by the new C-Class sedan’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 with 241 hp and 273 lb-ft and the 3.0-liter turbo V-6 rated at 329 hp and 354 lb-ft.
