Mercedes C63 AMG Edition 507

The C63 AMG Edition 507 outputs 56 hp more, bringing the output to 507 hp with 450 lb.-ft. of torque

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the more powerful, more aggressive C63 AMG model dubbed the “Edition 507” back in February, and at your request, we are taking another look at the insanely powerful AMG model. The output of the AMG 6.3 liter V8 engine has been increased by 56 hp, bringing the output to 507 hp with 450 lb.-ft. of torque.  Much of the technology from the SLS AMG has been carried over to the 2014 C63 AMG “Edition 507” including: the eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine features forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft as seen on the super sports car. An AMG high-performance compound constuction braking system with red brake calipers is fitted as standard.

The C63 AMG “Edition 507” will be on show in Geneva and be available in the Summer of 2013.

The C63 AMG “Edition 507” comes in both a coupe and sedan and produces 507 hp pushing it 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. This new model outperforms the existing 451 hp C63 model by three-tenths of a second, and the variants with the AMG Development Package which produce 481 hp by two-tenths of a second. In addition to an increase in top speed to 174 mph, the “Edition 507” also includes a voucher for a driver training session at the AMG Driving Academy.

According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The C 63 AMG with the classic AMG 6.3-litre high-revving V8 naturally aspirated engine is one of the most popular AMG high-performance cars in the world. With the new C 63 AMG “Edition 507″, we are offering our loyal customers an attractive model variant which boasts even higher performance and at the same time is visually exciting.”

C63 AMG “Edition 507” featuring technology from the SLS AMG

The increase in power output to 507 hp at 6800 rpm comes courtesy of the modified inner workings of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine. The forged pistons adopted from the SLS AMG, together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft, translate into a weight saving of 6.6 lbs. The reduction of rotational mass inertia improves the agility of the eight-cylinder M156 naturally aspirated engine. The maximum torque has also increased by 7 lb.-ft., jumping from 443 lb.-ft. to 450 lb.-ft. at 5200 rpm. The titanium grey-painted variable intake manifold is a characteristic feature of the uprated V8 engine. A new engine control system rounds off the series of implemented powertrain measures.

The exterior of the C63 AMG “Edition 507” is characterized by exclusive new design features. Most notable of the features is the hood – it originates from the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series. Two openings in the distinctive aluminium hood help with expelling engine heat. Newly designed AMG light-alloy forged wheels with 235/35 R 19 front tires and 255/30 R 19 rear tires are another exclusive feature of the “Edition 507”. The AMG light-alloy wheels are produced using lightweight forging technology and are available in two variants: titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, or matte black with highsheen rim flanges. An AMG sports stripe applique in matte graphite grey have been located above the rocker panels and are yet another new feature of the exterior.

The spoiler lip on the trunk lid, the exterior mirror housings as well as the
surrounds on the radiator grille and daytime running lights are all finished in high-gloss black. Available as an option for the C63 AMG “Edition 507” is an exclusive designo magno platinum matte finish paint.

AMG high-performance braking system featuring compound technology

As standard, the C63 AMG “Edition 507” comes with an even more powerful AMG high-performance braking system featuring compound construction technology. The front axle makes use of compound brake discs measuring 14.2 in. x 1.4 in. The advantages of the compound design include higher fatigue strength and lower warping characteristics. In addition, compound construction discs are lighter in weight and the reduced unsprung masses improve the response of the spring/damping elements.

With compound construction, the brake discs are connected to an aluminium bowl via eight cast bracket arms. The brake discs are ventilated and perforated all around and are decelerated by means of 6-piston aluminium fixed calipers on the front axle and 4-piston fixed calipers on the rear axle. The brake callipers are painted red as standard fitment.

“Edition 507” interior: even more dynamic and exclusive

The sporty yet functional interior of the C63 AMG is even more dynamic and exclusive in the case of the “Edition 507”. Three different equipment and options are available to choose from: porcelain designo leather/DINAMICA, black designo leather/DINAMICA and black designo leather. In the case of the designo leather/DINAMICA upholstery, light-colored contrast stitching makes for an attractive highlight. The AMG Performance steering wheel in Alcantara® with light-colored contrasting stitching has a 12-o’clock marking. The gear selector lever of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is finished in DINAMICA and features an AMG badge. The steering wheel and gear selector lever gaiter also have light-colored contrast stitching.

In the AMG instrument cluster, red applications to the dials serve to visually differentiate this variant from the other C63 AMG models. The trim is done in high-gloss black piano lacquer and the “Edition 507” badge on the trim on the front passenger side round off the high-quality, exclusive interior.

132 Cars Destroyed in A Good Day to Die Hard Scene

132 vehicles were destroyed in one epic car chase with Bruce Willis, while driving the Mercedes G-Class in Russia

The newest Die Hard movie, A Good Day to Die Hard, would not live up to the prior movies without complete and utter destruction.  After Thursday’s viewing, the latest film in the series lives up to the Die Hard name by destroying 132 vehicles, in one scene alone.  You read that correctly, 132 vehicles were destroyed in one epic car chase with Bruce Willis, while driving the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Russia.  These weren’t junky cars getting destroyed either, besides the Mercedes vehicles, one of the cars destroyed was a Lamborghini!  Total Scene Cost: $11 million.

In addition to the 132 cars that were beyond repair, another 518 required a lot of work. “With Die Hard it’s about how audacious the action is,” Moore says. “So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I’m a car fanatic.”

In total, it’s an expensive scene that plays out over several minutes and features some classic Bruce Willis one-liners, especially as he’s literally driving over the cars.  Was it worth it?  We think so, nice to see some actual destruction instead of CGI action.

Making of: A Good Day to Die Hard

As for how the filmmakers pulled it off, they got some help from Mercedes for the G Class, a vehicle that fits perfectly with the Russian backdrop.

“You go to Moscow it’s covered in these Mercedes, like yellow taxi cabs in New York,” says Moore. “So we said ‘Hey, can you help us out. Because we cannot afford to wreck all the cars that you see in Moscow. So send us some of those G wagons.”

Mercedes did just that and several Mercedes-Benzes vehicles died in the pursuit of great stunts, especially the ones with the supercharged engines. W’re told in fact the director was tempted to spare one of the cars when he was told he could keep it. “And there was a moment where it was like, ‘If I don’t wreck it, they said I can keep it.’ I really had this St.-Paul-on- the-road-to-Damascus moment.”

But, he stayed true to the destruction necessary for a Die Hard movie and wrecked it.  Don’t feel to bad for him though, A Good Day to Die Hard finished number one at the box office over the weekend and has already pulled in over 100 million worldwide, he can afford a new car. Mercedes-Benz Super Bowl Commercial Hit or Miss

"It is the best performing ad campaign I have seen since I started tracking Super Bowl ad performance" - Jeremy Anwyl from Edmunds

We want to know what you thought of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Super Bowl Commercial.  Was it a hit or a miss?  In the event that you are one of the few people left in the country that have not seen the latest Mercedes CLA Ad, you can check it out below along with the Kate Upton car washing commercial.  If you’re not interested in seeing the CLA commercials, click here to take a look at the CLA 180 Edition 1 that we are all in love with.

As for what the experts had to say about the Mercedes-Benz Super Bowl campaign, read on.

Ask Steve Cannon, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA what he wanted from the multi-prong marketing campaign the company put together for Super Bowl XLVII and he will say, “The goal was to create a compelling story which would introduce a new product – our 2014 CLA coupe — at a first-ever price point in a way that would not only get people talking but also begin to get them interested and engaged.”

According to Cannon – and various industry barometers — the campaign that Mercedes-Benz launched on January 20th did just that.

Right off the top, Mercedes-Benz benefited from the fact that the game was played at the “Mercedes-Benz Superdome” (the company invested in naming rights in 2011). ImageTrack powered by Kantar Media — IEG’s sponsorship/advertising broadcast monitoring service — projected that this would result in Mercedes-Benz receiving 6 minutes and 19 seconds of exposure during the game, valued at approximately $4.6 million. If the fourth-quarter for the CLA was then included, the total media exposure value was projected to exceed $12 million.

The campaign itself consisted of five elements. An advertising teaser campaign with four :15 spots and one :30 went into rotation during the AFC championships on January 20 queuing up the ad with the “Something…is coming,” tag. Two days later, the company released an online video (the parody of the stereotypical bikini clad model washing a car had Kate Upton playing to the camera while a bevy of good-looking young guys soaped up her car) which went viral and garnered close to three million views by the next day without the benefit of any paid media (it’s now at 7 million). This was followed by a long-form version of the Super Bowl ad “Soul” and then a “Behind the Scenes” online video. Combined, these four creative executions netted nearly 10 million views before the final element, the 60-second version of the ad was released (to date, that tally is well over 13 million).

“But,” notes Bernie Glaser, VP of marketing for MBUSA “To really amortize your investment, you’ve got to go deeper than measuring entertainment popularity. The real magic lies in converting awareness into consumer interest. Engaging people enough to go out of their way to find out more about your product — that’s the real payout.”

The ad itself, set in New Orleans where MBUSA has strong philanthropic ties in addition to its presence there, drives home an actual selling point – the CLA’s price. Created by Merkley+Partners (NYC), the storyline involves a devilish Willem Dafoe offering a young man a Mercedes CLA and all that comes with it — a red carpet moment with Kate Upton, a dance-off with Usher, a drive on the Formula 1 racetrack etc.—in exchange for his soul. But just when the young guy is about to make the deal, he spies a billboard touting the CLA’s MSRP of $29,900 and vanquishes Dafoe saying “I think I’ve got this.”

And, as the various industry ad metrics started to roll in, data shows that MBUSA’s spot itself “got this” and a whole lot more with audiences.

According to Ace Metrics, an independent analytics company which measures advertising effectiveness, “Soul” scored the highest of any automotive advertisement and tied for the 4th highest score overall for all ads on the Super Bowl.

As far as concrete evidence of effectiveness and engagement, Edmunds.com, one of the leading car information sites where potential buyers go to do their research, reported that the CLA had the highest jump in vehicle consideration both during the Game and in the 24-hour period that followed. Nearly one out of every five consumer searches during the fourth quarter was for the new sporty four-door coupe. In fact, queries for the entire Mercedes-Benz brand on the Edmunds website were up 122% from the average of the four previous Sundays, giving the brand the number one spot for consideration among all luxury makes during the Game.

“The CLA was the number one shopped vehicle on Edmunds.com over the weekend,” said Vice Chairman Jeremy Anwyl from Edmunds.com. “It is the best performing ad campaign I have seen since I started tracking Super Bowl ad performance. The CLA obviously connected with a vast audience, demonstrating Mercedes Benz is enjoying early success as it reaches to a new generation of luxury vehicle buyers.”

Looking ahead, the ad has its second broadcast appearance during the Academy Awards in late February. Its biggest star, the CLA, makes a brief appearance at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week starting today and will appear at the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship and other high-profile events that MBUSA sponsors. Digital and social media activations will be released over the next few months (the company’s Facebook page Facebook.com/Mercedes-Benz USA is currently offering select fans an opportunity to see the CLA in an expense-paid trip to New York in conjunction with the New York Auto Show) as the September launch of the sporty 208-hp four-door coupe draws near.

Ram Trucks Super Bowl Commercial “Farmer”

And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So God made a farmer.

God said, “I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper, then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board.” So God made a farmer.

God said, “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt and watch it die, then dry his eyes and say,’Maybe next year,’ I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from an ash tree, shoe a horse with hunk of car tire, who can make a harness out hay wire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. Who, during planting time and harvest season will finish his 40-hour week by Tuesday noon and then, paining from tractor back, put in another 72 hours.” So God made the farmer.

God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-comb pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the leg of a meadowlark.”

It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and brake, and disk, and plow, and plant, and tie the fleece and strain the milk, . Somebody who’d bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says that he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does. “So God made a farmer.”

Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series Explained – Video

SLS AMG Black Series - 622 hp, 468 lb ft of torque and a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, equal parts genius and completely mad

In its GT form, the Mercedes SLS AMG is an amazing machine, offering up 583 hp, 479 lb.-ft. The SLS AMG is a car that leaves the driver with little to desire.  Mercedes however, took the SLS AMG GT a step further offering a Black Series Version.

The SLS AMG Black Series is a vehicle that’s not only extreme but may well be the best Black Series model ever released by Mercedes. Looking back at the previous Black Series models, that may well be the highest compliment one could give the SLS AMG Black Series.

MBUSA released a video that featuring the super car at the LA Auto show and product manager Will Vetter explaining how Mercedes came to design the SLS AMG Blacker Series and in-depth information about the car itself.

Vetter sums the Black Series up when he reminds us of the cars abilities: 622 hp, 468 lb ft of torque and a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, it’s equal parts genius and completely mad.

Ready to attack, like a predator about to pounce. Watch this film and see the new Mercedes-Benz CLA demonstrate its power in a duel between machine and beast.

The CLA250 and CLA250 4MATIC both feature Mercedes-Benz’s 2.0-liter four- cylinder gasoline engine with 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It comes with the ECO stop/start function as standard for added gas mileage and is mated to the 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission for an outstanding combination of sporty performance and comfort.

The CLA’s sporty proportions and powerfully dynamic design language featuring the interaction of concave and convex surfaces give this four-door coupe its distinctive look. The CLA carries the avant-garde design of the Concept Style Coupe into series production almost 1:1.

Striking features include the hood with its power domes and the diamond-look grille. The arrangement of the headlights and LEDs behind the headlamp lens evokes the characteristic “flame effect” for the optional daytime running lights and indicators. This light signature is a key aspect of the car’s energetic look and shapes a new, youthful Mercedes face.

The exterior’s progressive, sporty appearance also carries through to the vehicle interior. Anthracite surface finish is available as the standard trim. Additional trim options include burl walnut wood, black ash wood and aluminum.

The instrument panel incorporates five air vents. The outer rings of the vents are done in a high-quality galvanized finish, while a galvanized insert controls the direction of airflow. The free-standing display is set in black piano-lacquer trim and edged with a flush-fitting silver frame.

Kate Upton Mercedes Super Bowl Ad (Maybe)

Could this be the Kate Upton Mercedes-Benz Super Bowl Commerical

We recently told you Mercedes had enlisted Kate Upton, possibly the sexiest girl of the century (see Kate Upton photo gallery here), to help promote the new CLA-Class in an upcoming Super Bowl commercial.  Today, a video has emerged highlighting Kate with the CLA-Class – a video that could Kate Upton’s Super Bowl commercial, but I’m guessing probably isn’t.  Instead, it looks like more of a teaser video for Kate Upton teaming up with the Mercedes CLA, with the real tv spot coming later, because quite frankly, the video is less than exciting.

In the shoot (which is entitled Kate Upton washes the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA in slow motion), Kate does not in fact wash the CLA.  Instead, she watches some high school guys wash it, while she models some vaguely sexy poses (although she does have bubbles on her hand).  It’s sort of like a GoDaddy / Danica Patrick ad, except it lacks all the sexiness.  Instead, it’s sort of like an exercise in corporate censorship.

The following video is a compilation of all the best or worst, depending on how you look at it, crashes of open track days on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The thing about the Nürburgring is, it does not forgive errors. 2014 Mercedes E63 AMG First Drive Video

The face-lifted E-class arrives with the 2014 model year and the E63 is not far behind

Competition continues to heat up in the battle of sport sedans, and while the BMW M5 has reigned for years, the Audi S6 was titled champ in one test. And now, to increase its standings, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is doing what was once thought unthinkable. It will feature an all-wheel drive setup for the 2014 model year. Though rear-wheel drive was thought as the optimal way that power should be delivered in a sports car, that dynamic has been changed upside down in recent years. With torque vectoring and other high-tech systems, it’s pretty clear that to remain competitive at the highest level, AWD will be the next step for manufacturers. So, while details about the AWD AMG have remained tucked away, now we’re hearing some of the NEW details for the FIRST time.

Check out the clip below to hear all about Mercedes’ upcoming 2014 E63 AMG.

From Car and Driver

In late November, barely 12 months after the introduction of the most recent Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, we were offered the opportunity to ride along with AMG’s top managers during a sign-off drive of the upcoming 2014 E63. What’s more, this will mark the third major revision of the E63 since the current-generation E-class, the W212, was introduced to the press in the summer of 2009 as a 2010 model. Among the luxury-car competition, Mercedes seems to put a higher priority on the prompt introduction of its high-performance variants than do the others.

The motivation for this latest change is the midcycle enhancement to the E-class line as a whole. Most of the German carmakers operate on a six-year interval between major redesigns, with a face lift halfway through the cycle. The face-lifted E-class arrives with the 2014 model year and the E63 is not far behind.

U.S. cars go AWD

Of course, we wouldn’t bother with a new E63 if it received nothing more than differently creased sheetmetal. But this 2014 model will come with something that we’ve never before experienced on an AMG passenger car—all-wheel drive. Not only will the E63 have the Mercedes 4MATIC system, but that’s the only way it will come to America, although the rest of the world will still be able to order a rear-drive version.

While we usually regard the move from front-wheel drive to AWD as a performance enhancement, the benefits of adding powered front wheels to a rear-drive car are less obvious. In fact, our first suspicious thought was that rather than improve performance, AWD was being added to broaden the appeal of AMG cars in northern climates, where most Mercedes are sold with 4MATIC. Since many AMG buyers—unlike BMW M buyers—seem to regard the AMG models as the top-of-the line rather than as pure performance versions, this would broaden the market for the AMG cars.

Torque-split personality

Ola Källenius, AMG’s CEO, explains that its products should have a split personality: “AMG cars are all designed so that that they can be driven everyday. But they are also expected to perform well at the track. We think 4MATIC will enhance this dual capability.”

Källenius goes on to explain: “It has taken us about two and a half years of engineering to take the basics of the 4MATIC and redevelop it for AMG purposes. For AMG, the 4MATIC torque split is revised, biased 67 percent to the rear axle, 33 percent to the front, and it is actually quicker on the track than our previous rear-drive configuration.”

The additional 4MATIC hardware adds weight—about 130 pounds. Based on the last E63 we tested, which weighed 4233 pounds, the additional weight moves the E63 from among the lightest to the heaviest cars in the segment, although by only about 100 pounds.

More power, Scotty

Making up for the additional weight is an uprated engine. It’s still a twin-turbocharged 5461-cc V-8, but a judicious increase in boost increases power from 518 to 550 hp, while peak torque rises from 516 to 531 lb-ft. Coupled with the improved traction, expect a 0-to-60 time of less than 3.5 seconds and a quarter-mile time in the high 11s at no less than 125 mph.

The usual Performance package with even more power and torque will be announced later, but expect to see at least an additional 26 ponies and another 26 lb-ft of torque, along with a relaxed governor that allows top speed to rise from 155 to 186 mph. There was a hint that this package might include other upgrades as well, along with some clear visual identification.

Video: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA Spied Testing on Video

The new Mercedes GLA will go head to head with the BMW X1, thanks to its sporty appearance, influenced by the A-Class

The exceptionally stealthy spies over at WCF have managed to capture the Mercedes-Benz GLA prototype on video while undergoing some testing.

It will be an entry-level crossover from Mercedes, that will be based on the MLA platform that also underpins the Mercedes A-Class and B-Class models. The engine lineup will more than likely be very similar to both the A- and B-Class and will be topped by an AMG version with a four-cylinder, 2.0-literturbocharged engine delivering approximately 335 HP (246 kW), though unconfirmed.

The new GLA will go head to head with the BMW X1, thanks to the GLA’s sporty appearance that is heavily influenced by the A-Class. Based on the photos we’ve seen, we’re going to see sweptback headlights, roof rails, tailgate-mounted spoiler, a prominent front grille and an higher ride height.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA is scheduled to come out next year in Europe, followed by a 2014 launch in the U.S.

The engines will carryover from the A-Class, however the CLA 45 AMG will feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 354 HP (260 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque that will be connected to a 7G-DCT transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system with a “Torque on Demand” rear axle. The CLA 250 will feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 211 HP (155 kW) and will be available with all-wheel drive.
