The WCF spies have managed to snap the first batch of spy photos of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG .
Though the facelifted M-Class was spied several times before, this is the first time we can see what is being done to the AMG version that will debut in October at the Paris Motor Show alongside the standard version. The prototype seen in the spy photos was spotted doing handling tests in southern Europe.
Facelift changes shown are minimal since due to the heavy camo at the front, but you will likely see the M-Class facelift showing far more significant changes when the camo is dropped. Although the taillights don’t have any camouflage over them, they will most likely be tweaked as well and we expect to find different character lines, a single-bar front grille and updated headlights with a daytime running light bar.
Under the hood, we are unlikely to see any changes, which means the ML 63 AMG facelift will use the V8 5.5-liter twin-turbo which churns 525 PS (386 kW) and 699 Nm (516 lb-ft) in standard guise and 558 PS (410 kW) and 758 Nm (560 lb-ft) when configured with the optional AMG Performance Package. With the latter, the high-performance SUV needs 4.6 seconds until 60 mph (96 km/h) and can hit a top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h) while the standard ML 63 AMG is 0.1s slower in the sprint and is electronically-capped at 155 mph (250 km/h).

German tuner, Brabus is now offering two high performance SUVs, the Brabus B63S – 700 Widestar. Based on the ML 63 AMG and the GL 63 AMG, the Brabus SUVs can output a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph), a peak power output of 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp), an electronically limited torque of 960 Nm (708 lb-ft). All with an attractive widebody version with 23-inch high-tech forged wheels.

With the new B63S – 700 performance kit BRABUS significantly upgrades the potential of the 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine in the ML 63 and GL 63. And like the familiar B63-620 performance kit, which boosts power output of the eight-cylinder to 456 kW / 620 hp (611 bhp), the new and markedly more powerful version is backed by the one-of-a-kind BRABUS Tuning Warranty of three years, up to 100.000 kilometers/62,000 miles. It goes without saying that this performance kit will soon also be available for the Mercedes G 63 AMG.
At the heart of the BRABUS B63S – 700 engine conversion are the newly designed peripherals of the turbocharged eight-cylinder four-valve engine. While the intake and charge-air pipes immediately catch the observer’s eye thanks to their BRABUS Gold Heat Reflection insulation, the other important details of the conversion remain invisible from the outside. They include the two special BRABUS turbochargers with larger compressor unit, which generate a higher boost pressure than the production turbos.
The production exhaust system is replaced with a free-flow metal catalyst system that features downpipes with a diameter of 75 mm (3 in.). In addition, a BRABUS stainless-steel sport exhaust system with controlled butterfly valve is available for both vehicles. They give the driver the option of choosing between a discrete “Coming Home” mode and a decidedly sporty exhaust note at the push of a button on the steering wheel.
All high-performance components were perfectly matched to each other and to the new mapping for injection and ignition by the BRABUS electronics specialists and engineers using state-of-the-art test rigs and test drives on public roads and racetracks. The result is a perfect symbiosis of environmentally compatible exhaust emissions in line with current EURO V standards, durability beyond reproach and outstanding power yield.
With a power output of 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) at 5,300 rpm the BRABUS B63S – 700 engine in the ML 63 surpasses its origin by up to 129 kW / 175 hp (173 bhp) – depending on whether the car was delivered with or without Performance package. The GL 63 with an identical power output of 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) adds 105 kW / 143 hp (141 hp). Just as impressive in both SUVs is the increase in peak torque. Both tuning versions produce 960 Nm (708 lb-ft) of torque from a low 2,000 rpm. Peak torque was limited electronically to protect the drivetrain.
The combination of ultra-powerful BRABUS B63S – 700 engine and AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission achieves performance levels that previously seemed more likely for a sports car than for an SUV. From rest the all-wheel-drive car based on the ML 63 accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.4 seconds. At 4.6 seconds the heavier GL takes just two tenths of a second longer. The BRABUS Vmax unit, which is part of the engine conversion, limits the top speed electronically to 300 km/h (186 mph) to protect the tires.
These tremendous speeds also necessitated modifications to the aerodynamics, tires and suspension. The BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody version for both SUVs is impressive not only on account of its fender flares on the front and rear axle.
To reduce negative lift on the front axle the BRABUS designers developed an additional front spoiler and a rear spoiler as its aerodynamic counterpart.
In addition, the front of the refined ML 63 AMG is accentuated with striking add-on components for the side air inlets. The rear receives some added sporty character with a central diffuser for the production bumper. This bodywork component can be combined with the production exhaust or with the two ceramic-coated dual designer tailpipes of the BRABUS sport exhaust.
The BRABUS WIDESTAR fender flares add six centimeters (2.4 inches) to the width of the M-Class at the front and rear axle. The GL even adds eight centimeters (3.1 inches) in width. This not only results in a more bullish appearance, which is further complemented by add-on components for the front and rear fascia. The WIDESTAR fender flares also create space for extremely wide BRABUS king-size wheels with diameters of up to 23 inches.
Wheels in size 10Jx22 for the BRABUS WIDESTAR version are available in five designs: Monoblock VI, E, G “Platinum Edition”, Q and R. The most exclusive version on offer features giant BRABUS Monoblock R “Platinum Edition” forged wheels in size 11Jx23. Thanks to state-of-the-art manufacturing technology these wheels represent a unique combination of lightweight construction and maximum strength. The matching high-performance tires in size 315/25 ZR 23 for the ML and in size 305/30 ZR 23 for the GL are supplied by BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA.
A special BRABUS control module for the AIRMATIC air suspension of the ML 63 AMG or GL 63 AMG lowers the ride height of the high-performance SUVs. This not only adds further visual pizzazz to the all-wheel-drive car, but as a result of the lowered center of gravity also further improves dynamic handling.
BRABUS is one of the leading addresses in the world for exclusive automotive interior design. The company upholstery shop crafts interiors from the finest leathers and Alcantara, tailor-made to customer specifications.
As a striking complement to these interiors BRABUS also offers wood and genuine carbon-fiber trim sets in any desired color and with a variety of surface finishes. BRABUS aluminum shift paddles for the steering wheel add sporty highlights in the cockpit. Another particular specialty of the refinement specialist from Bottrop is the BRABUS teakwood floor for the trunk of the two SUVs.
In case you’re wondering about the current state of wealth around the world, Russia is home to the second largest billionaire population in the world. With so much money at its disposal, it makes sense then that Russia is also home to some of the most extreme and outrageous tuners.
Although tame in comparison to some tuners we’ve seen come from Russia, the new ML63 AMG Inferno bodykit in black is pretty impressive.
Check out the photo gallery below for a look at the TopCar ML63 AMG Inferno full body-kit complete with new front bumper and massive air vents, updated side skirts, rear bumper with integrated air diffuser, blacked out windows and massive wheel arches.
When it comes to high powered SUV’s, the Mercedes ML63 AMG is best in class. Add to the already powerful ML63 AMG a power kit from Chai Wan-based tuning specialist, RevoZport and you have a sport utility vehicle that will take you nearly anywhere in record time.
The standard 2012 Mercedes ML63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter biturbo V8 engine that outputs 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. RevoZport updated the ML63 AMG with a carbon fiber intake system, a modified engine management mapping and a complete titanium exhaust system, in order to add an extra 82 hp for a total output on the RevoZport ML63 AMG at 600 hp. The tuner did not disclose the torque output of their ML63, sprint time or top speed, meaning they either forgot to include or did not have significant enough gains to warrant a discussion.
The RevoZport 2012 ML63 AMG comes with a carbon fibre front splitter, a carbon fibre rear diffuser, and roof spoiler. The front splitter is 30mm wider than the factory one, creating extra downforce on the SUV’s front axle. The RevoZport Mercedes ML63 AMG is additionally fitted with carbon fibre covers on the side mirror, and an updated front grille. The SUV is set atop 22-inch forged wheels and 13J x 335 tires.
Press Release
The new W166 ML63 may consider being the fastest and best looking ML ever since the ML is launched, the new turbo v8 with 525hp engine is however not enough in Revozport’s mind, perhaps 600hp is more like it.
By putting in a new carbon induction system, engine management mapping and a complete titanium exhaust, it takes this mean SUV to a complete new level of fast. Now with 600hp on hand and the roaring sound from the 6kg titanium exhaust, Revozport have designed a complete new set of aerokit for all the ML63 owners.
Revozport call it the Rezonance ML, which comprises of a new double deck carbon fibre front splitter, 30mm wider carbon over fender kit which allow this 600hp beast to put on their bespoke 22″ forged alloy 13J x 335 tires all round. The rear shows a complete 3 element diffuser in carbon fibre, a trunk roof spoiler and although retaining the AMG exhaa
The Rezonance ML63 complete aerokit is also available to the W166 ML owners by special request as a bespoke program.
Brabus refines the Mercedes ML 63 AMG. The spectacular WIDESTAR wide-body from Brabus outputs 456.3 kW / 620 hp (611 bhp) of power and a peak torque of 820 Nm (604 lb-ft) to give it a top speed of up to 300 km/h (186 mph), proving there is no such thing as enough power. The Brabus engine specialists have developed performance tuning for the ML63 AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine named the B63-620 performance kit. The engine tuning kit is available in various versions for vehicles with or without AMG performance package.
The tuning involves the integration of a plug-and-play Brabus PowerXtra module into the engine electronics. This auxiliary control unit optimizes power yield as the result of a new mapping for injection and ignition as well as a moderate increase in boost pressure.
The perfect complement to the Brabus engine tuning for the ML 63 AMG is a stainless-steel Brabus sport exhaust system with butterfly valve. It gives drivers the option of switching between a discreet and quiet “coming home” mode and a decidedly throaty V8 exhaust note in “sport” mode at the push of a button. The Brabus sport exhaust features two ceramics-coated design exhaust embellishers on either side for an even more striking rear appearance.
ML 63 models delivered ex-factory without performance package gain an extra 69 kW / 95 hp (93 bhp) with Brabus B63-620 tuning; the performance version adds 45 kW / 63 hp (60 bhp). Both models produce a peak torque of 820 Nm (604 lb-ft), available between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm.
The Brabus-tuned SUV accelerates from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. The Brabus Vmax unit that is part of the performance kit can be programmed to allow an electronically limited top speed of 280 or 300 km/h (174 or 186 mph).
At these speeds aerodynamic properties are crucial. To account for this fact, the Brabus designers have developed an additional spoiler for the production fascia. It is made from clear-coated carbon fiber and reduces lift on the front axle. A rear spoiler is available as its aerodynamic counterpart.
The front of the refined ML 63 AMG adds more appeal with striking attachments for the side air inlets. A centrally placed diffuser made from clear-coated carbon fiber adds even more sporty character to the rear.
The Brabus WIDESTAR fender flares on the front and rear axle add six centimeters (2.5 inches) to the width of the top-of-the-line M-Class. These flares give the vehicle a more bullish stance that is rounded out with the attachment components for the sides of the front and rear fasciae. But that’s not all: The WIDESTAR fender flares also make room for extremely wide Brabus king-size tires with diameters of up to 23 inches.
The largest possible tire/wheel combination for the Brabus WIDESTAR version features size 10Jx22 wheels. Customers can choose from five wheel designs, Monoblock VI, E, G “Platinum Edition”, Q and R. The most exclusive option is the Brabus Monoblock G “Platinum Edition” forged wheel. Thanks to cutting-edge manufacturing technology it offers an unparalleled combination of lightweight design and maximum strength. The corresponding high-performance tires in size 295/30 ZR 22 are supplied by Brabus technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA.
A special Brabus control module for the AIRMATIC air suspension of the ML 63 AMG lowers the ride height of the high-performance SUV. This not only gives the all-wheel-drive car an even more striking appearance, the lowered center of gravity also further improves handling.
Brabus is one of the top addresses in the world for exclusive automotive interior design. The company upholstery shop uses the finest leather and Alcantara to craft custom-tailored interiors for the ML 63 AMG to suit each owner’s personal taste.
Wood and genuine carbon-fiber trim sets in any desired color and with a variety of surface finishes are available to round out the ensemble. A speedometer with 360-km/h dial (225 mph) is also part of the product program.
The new Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG offers power and efficiency, running on 11.8 liters of fuels per 100 km (3.1 gallons per 62 miles) making it 28% more efficient than its predecessor. The cost for the ML 63 AMG in Europe is set at €108,885 EUR, available in the U.S. in March with a starting MSRP of $95,865 (includes $875 destination charge), positioning it perfectly between the BMW X5M and the BMW X6M. For an additional €7,021 EUR, you can get an additional 2 hp from the AMG Performance Package which includes more than just the hp upgrade. The AMG Performance package boosts the V8 engine’s power output to 410 kW (557 hp) and its maximum torque to 760 newton meters.
The new ML 63 AMG comes with an exciting technology package: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, ECO start/stop system, an all-aluminium crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-water intercooling and alternator management. With a displacement of 5461 cc, the eight-cylinder engine generates a maximum power output of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 newton meters of torque. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package these values rise to 410 kW (557 hp) and 760 newton metres. This difference in power and torque results from an increase in the maximum charge pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar.
Both variants of the ML 63 AMG enable sports-car performance: acceleration from zero to 100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds and 4.7 seconds respectively, while the top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). With or without AMG Performance package, the NEDC fuel consumption figure of 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres (276 g CO2/km) remains the same.

Efficient and variable: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC
Power is transmitted to all four permanently driven wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission offers a fascinatingly broad scope of variability. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. “C” also stands for a gentle accelerator and transmission characteristic with early gear changes; start-up generally takes place in second gear here. A green “ECO” symbol in the AMG instrument cluster indicates to the driver that the ECO start/stop function is active.
In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes the ECO start/stop function is inactive and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility. A brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load additionally provides for shorter shift times here.
Enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics
As efficiency-enhancing measures, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission incorporates a new fuel-economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a transmission-oil thermal management system. Friction loss-minimised axle gears, electric steering, an optimised belt drive, and demand-responsive control of all ancillary units and pumps all help to further reduce fuel consumption.
As previously, Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive which distributes the engine power at a ratio of 40 : 60 to the front and rear axle in the interests of high driving dynamics. Furthermore, the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package – consisting of air suspension, independent damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) – features for the first time in combination with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to compensate the body’s roll angles during cornering. In addition to enhanced agility and driving enjoyment, the system also improves driving stability for added safety at higher speeds in particular.
Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The driver is able to choose at the push of a button between the three suspension modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”. The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability.
The AMG-specific elastokinematics at the front axle and the more robustly designed rear axle stabiliser bar are responsible for improved steering precision. The enhanced drive train stands for optimum power transmission and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The 4ETS electronic traction control system which features as standard provides for optimised grip when low friction coefficients apply.
AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system
Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering features variable vehicle speed-dependent power assistance and helps to save fuel, as the steering assist function only requires energy when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. The ML 63 AMG comes as standard with 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels in 9 x 20 format, painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with tyres in size 265/45 R 20. Tyres in size 295/35 R 21 on AMG light-alloy wheels in 10 x 21 format are optionally available. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance, featuring ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round in size 390 x 36 (front) and 345 x 26 millimetres (rear).
Specific AMG styling with trim in matt silver chrome
The design of the new ML 63 AMG exudes self-confidence, athleticism and power. The AMG bodystyling dominates the front view: under the radiator grille with louvres painted in high-gloss black and the large Mercedes star is a large cooling air intake. Together with the two outer air intakes, the central radiator grille provides for an effective flow of air to the water, engine oil, charge-air and transmission oil coolers. Fitted at the bottom of the AMG front apron is a trim strip in matt silver chrome, which lends the front a wider appearance while harmonising with the surrounds of the daytime running lamps in the side cooling air intakes. The headlamps cut a particularly high-quality and exclusive figure in combination with the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS). The AMG front apron is integrated with the distinctive front wings, which are 10 millimetres wider on either side in order to accommodate the large AMG light-alloy wheels in elegant fashion. “V8 BITURBO” logos identify the vehicle as the flagship AMG model in the M-Class. Dynamically profiled AMG side sill panels establish a visual link between the front and rear of the vehicle.
Another eye-catching feature is the AMG rear apron with its simulated black air outlet openings. They emphasise the vehicle’s width similarly to the trim strips in matt silver chrome, which cite the design of the front apron and frame the AMG sports exhaust system. In contrast to the other M-Class variants, the ML 63 AMG features two sets of chrome twin tailpipes. The full and distinctive eight-cylinder sound is an AMG hallmark.
High-quality, sporty interior
A sporty character and premium quality define the interior of the high-performance SUV from AMG. This is embodied in the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats offering pronounced lateral support as well as the four-spoke AMG performance steering wheel, which ensures optimum control of the vehicle with perforated leather in the grip area, aluminium shift paddles and a rim with a flattened bottom section. Aluminium trim and the piano-lacquer retractable cover in the centre console highlight the interior’s dynamic and exclusive flair. The standard leather upholstery includes contrasting double topstitching and AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats. Dashboard, armrests and door panelling in AMG-specific design are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with double topstitching.
The distinctively designed instrument cluster with colour TFT monitor, AMG welcome logo and AMG main menu is exclusive to the ML 63 AMG.

Safety of the very highest calibre
In line with the Mercedes-Benz brand philosophy, the new ML 63 AMG is the embodiment of the Mercedes-Benz holistic safety concept of Real Life Safety, which is derived primarily from what happens in a real accident situation. The extremely robust passenger compartment, together with the front and rear deformation zones, forms an effective basis for the occupant protection systems. Up to nine airbags, activated on demand in accordance with the accident type and accident severity, can reduce the loads exerted on the occupants. In addition to active safety systems such as the standard-fit Brake Assist (BAS) or the optional BAS PLUS, which can help to prevent an accident or reduce the severity of an accident, the new M-Class features further enhanced passive-safety measures to help protect pedestrians.
Both active safety and driver-fitness safety are improved by assistance systems that will already be familiar, primarily from the S-Class and E-Class. The standard equipment package includes the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, the anticipatory safety system PRE-SAFE® and a tyre pressure monitoring system, as well as adaptive brake lights and the ESP® Electronic Stability Program. Active assistance systems such as Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist are available as additional equipment options.
The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG will be launched in April 2012. Overview of prices (incl. 19% VAT):

As a father, there is nothing more important in a vehicle than its safety. As a man, there is nothing more important in a vehicle than its power. Thankfully Mercedes-Benz vehicles fit into both categories and the 2012 ML63 AMG is no exception. The AMG SUV keeps in line with the Mercedes-Benz brand philosophy, and represents the embodiment of the Mercedes-Benz holistic safety concept of real life safety, which is derived primarily from what happens in a real accident situation. The extremely tough occupant compartment of the M-Class, together with the front and rear deformation zones, forms an effective basis for the occupant protection system. Both active safety and driver-fitness safety are further improved by Assistance Systems that can also be seen in the S-Class and E-Class.
As with all passenger car models from Mercedes-Benz, the philosophy behind the safety concept of the M-Class is broken down into four phases:
The high level of safety already achieved in the previous model has been increased even further. The many “invisible” Mercedes-Benz solutions in particular bring measurable benefits in real accident situations. To support new technologies or the evolution of existing systems, the engineers carried out numerous crash tests which went way beyond the tests normally specified, such as the roof-drop test for example, as well as various rollover tests. When it detects the need to do so, a rollover sensor system can activate side and window airbags, as well as belt tensioners. In total, as part of the M-Class development Mercedes-Benz tested 36 totally different loads under real test conditions. Then there were the extensive simulations on the digital prototype. Following this intensive programme of development, the M-Class has the potential to achieve top results in all the international rating tests.
The M-Class is also able to demonstrate the highest possible protection potential when it comes to more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians or cyclists. In addition to yielding areas in the front section, folding exterior mirrors and smooth contours, the risk of injury caused by the vehicle has been reduced by adapting the bonnet and increasing the distance to the components in the engine compartment.
“Electronic crumple zone”
As ever, the best accident is one which does not happen at all. The safety engineers at the Mercedes Technology Center are working intensively on this rather simple sounding statement, which in practice is actually a lot more difficult to implement. Both active safety and driver-fitness safety in the ML 63 AMG are further improved by the numerous active and passive assistance systems:
Standard equipment forming part of the safety concept of the new M-Class includes the anticipatory safety system PRE-SAFE®, which combines active and passive safety synergies to reduce the loads exerted on the vehicle occupants in the event of an accident by up to 40 percent. Depending on the potential accident situation detected, the following reversible measures can be initiated for preventive occupant protection:
Body: high energy absorption in the event of a front impact
The extremely robust occupant cell of the ML 63 AMG, together with the front and rear deformation zones, forms an effective basis for the occupant protection system. The focus of the work here has been the tangible reduction of the loads exerted on the occupants. In the case of front impacts, the engineers were able to achieve more uniform deceleration, and therefore a lower peak load on the occupants.
This was made possible by means of:
Side-impact protection thanks to intelligent bodyshell
A safe ending: the rear section
The rear area of the M-Class also protects the sturdy passenger compartment in crash situations thanks to specific deformation work, therefore minimising the loads on the occupants. A special impact test conducted to check tank leakage gives an indication of the exceptional load capabilities of the rear part of the M-Class body. The test involved running a crash carriage into the rear of the M-Class at 80 km/h. The tank system survived this fatal impact without suffering any leaks.
To enhance rigidity, increase the energy absorption capability and improve deformation behaviour, the multi-piece rear longitudinal members feature a continuous closed cross-section with stepped plate thicknesses (tailored blanks). The spare wheel well forms an integrated part of the steel floor, and a steel flexible bumper bracket carries the rear bumper covering and is connected to the rear structure via two steel crashboxes.
Comprehensive restraint systems for occupant protection
The passive occupant protection systems, together with the “electronic crumple zone” and intelligent body design which have already been described, provide optimum protection potential, placing the M-Class at the top of its market segment. As part of this, a number of new deployment strategies are used. For example, the system can detect an impending rollover in the event of crash and if necessary deploy the window airbags and the seat belt tensioners. Thanks to the new generously-sized side airbags and the window airbags with extended area of coverage, in the event of a side impact the occupants can be more uniformly supported from the shoulder area down to the pelvic area.
Additional protection potential is also provided for rear seat passengers with seat belt tensioners and force limiters on the outer seat positions. The integration of optional thorax bags in the tilt-adjustable folding seat backrests enables optimum airbag positioning for each backrest position. The components of the passive occupant protection systems include:
Occupants also protected after a crash
Even after an accident, the new M-Class can help prevent secondary accidents and protect the occupants. After a more serious crash, the hazard warning lights are automatically activated to warn surrounding traffic. At the same time, the doors are automatically unlocked so that the emergency services (if required) have the best possible unrestricted access to the passengers. And thanks to partial opening of the side windows, the interior is better ventilated after airbag deployment.
On detecting a collision, the central control unit switches off the fuel system to reduce the risk of a possible fire. After determining the cylinder positions, the engine management system opens the injection valves of those cylinders which are not under compression and discharges the high-pressure fuel area by direct evacuation of the remaining fuel in the combustion chamber. This further reduces the risk of fuel escaping. To avoid fuel losses, all M-Class models are also fitted with cut-resistant fuel lines in all relevant locations. This also helps to reduce the risk of a possible fire breaking out.
If you are a loyal Mercedes-Benz driver, there is a good chance you have never heard of Russian Tuner, TopCar. They mainly focus on styling packages for Porsche, their latest being the Panamera Stingray GTR. Limited edition. But for the first time, TopCar turned their attention to Mercedes-Benz and the all new 2012 ML63 AMG.
Based on the renderings, it looks like TopCar added a restyled front fascia with LEDs, flared out fenders, side skirts, door skin panels, flared quarter panel wheel arches and an unassuming rear fascia. The quad exhaust pipes are stock and have not been updated, TopCar also removed the roof rails for a sleeker look.
The front and rear bumper styling has remained similar to the standard Mercedes ML63 AMG while the widened arches and sculpted door panels give the SUV a more dramatic look like that of the Black Series.
According to WCF, TopCar says the body kit will be made of carbon fiber and Kevlar using the technology of vacuum molding. The first car is likely to appear in spring 2012.
Mercedes-Benz was kind enough to unveil the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG ahead of its world debut on Wednesday at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG unites efficiency and performance, exclusivity and an outstanding driving experience. The estimated combined fuel economy for the high-performance SUV is 16 mpg, marking a 33-percent improvement over its predecessor. The basis for the excellent fuel economy and performance is the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine with an output of 518 hp and torque of 516 lb-ft, representing an increase of 15 hp and 44 lb-ft over its predecessor. The available AMG Performance Package boosts the V8 engine’s power output to 550 hp and its maximum torque to 560 lb-ft. The newly developed ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilization, the AMG design and the broad scope of standard equipment and appointments produce a highly attractive overall package. The 2012MY ML63 AMG will be available in US showrooms in Q1 2012.

As the inventor of the high-performance SUV, we remain true to the philosophy which we introduced in 1999 with the 2000MY ML55 AMG and continued with the 2007MY ML63 AMG.”
The new ML63 AMG showcases exceptional new technology. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine features spray-guided gasoline direct injection with piezo injectors, ECO stop/start system, an all-aluminum crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-to-water charge air cooling and efficient alternator management. With a displacement of 5461 cc, the eight-cylinder engine generates a maximum power output of 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Combined with the AMG Performance Package, these values rise to 550 hp and 560 lb-ft. This difference in power and torque results from an increase in the maximum charge pressure from 14.0 to 18.8 psi. Both variants of the ML63 AMG deliver sports-car performance. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph takes 4.7 seconds and 4.6 seconds respectively, while the top speed remains at 155 mph (electronically limited) and at 174 mph with the AMG Performance Package. With or without the AMG Performance Package, fuel economy remains unchanged. The AMG Performance Package also includes an engine cover in high-quality genuine carbon fiber, calipers painted in red and the AMG Performance steering wheel in Premium leather/DINAMICA.

Efficient and versatile – AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed transmission
Power delivery to all four permanently driven wheels is via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission. Featuring three driving programs and a rev-matching function for downshifting, this outstanding gearbox offers amazingly broad scope. In “Controlled Efficiency” mode (C) the ECO stop/start function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. The “C” mode also delivers smoother acceleration and transmission characteristics with comfortable, earlier gear changes. Pulling away in this mode usually begins in second gear. A green “ECO” symbol in the AMG instrument cluster indicates that the ECO stop/start function is active.
In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving programs the ECO stop/start function is inactive and the engine/transmission characteristics are far more agile. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshift at full load also delivers shorter shift times.
Enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics
For added efficiency, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission incorporates a new fuel-efficient torque converter, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a thermal management system for the transmission oil. Axle gears with minimal friction loss, electronic steering, an optimized belt drive, on-demand control of all accessory drives and an intelligent lightweight design also help to reduce fuel consumption even further. The new ML63 AMG is 99 pounds lighter than its predecessor – despite the increase in power and the more comprehensive range of standard equipment.
As on the previous model, Mercedes-AMG uses a dedicated transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes engine power at a ratio of 40:60 to the front and rear axle for improved dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the AMG sports suspension with AIRMATIC Air Suspension, independent damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) is combined for the first time with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilization. This system, which is standard equipment on the ML63 AMG, features active stabilizers on the front and rear axles to compensate for body roll during cornering. In addition to enhanced agility and driving fun, the system also improves stability for added safety, especially at higher speeds.
Roll stabilization, damping and suspension adapt instantaneously to the prevailing driving situation, offering optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The driver can choose at the touch of a button between the three driving modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Manual”. The air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds to minimize drag while increasing stability.
The AMG elastokinematics on the front axle and more robust stabilizer bar on the rear axle improve steering precision. The enhanced drivetrain provides optimum power transmission and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The standard 4ETS electronic traction control system provides the best possible grip in slippery conditions.
AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system
Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering features speed-based power assistance and helps to save fuel because it only consumes energy when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. The ML63 AMG comes with 20inch 5-spoke alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-gloss finish and fitted with 265/45 R 20 high-performance tires. Also available are optional 295/35 R 21 tires on 21-inch AMG alloy wheels. The AMG high-performance braking system provides the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance, featuring ventilated and perforated brake discs at all four corners. Sizes are 15.4″ x 1.4″ (front) and 13.6″ x 1.0″ (rear).
AMG styling with trim in silver chrome matte finish
The design of the new ML63 AMG exudes self-confidence, athleticism and power. AMG styling dominates the front view. Beneath the radiator grille with louvers in high-gloss paint finish and the prominent Mercedes star is a large cooling air intake. Together with the two air intakes, the central radiator grille provides effective airflow to the radiator, as well as the engine oil, charge air and transmission oil coolers. Fitted at the bottom of the AMG front skirt is a trim strip in matte silver chrome, which lends breadth to the front end while blending with the frames of the daytime running lights and into the side air intakes. Bixenon headlamps offer a premium and and exclusive look in combination with the standard Lighting Package. The AMG front skirt is integrated into the distinctive front fenders, which are 0.4 inches wider on either side to accommodate the large AMG alloy wheels. Prominent, fender-mounted “V8 BITURBO” badges identify the vehicle as the top AMG model in the M-Class. AMG illuminated sill panels feature dynamic styling and establish a visual link between the front and rear of the vehicle.
Another eye-catching feature is the AMG rear skirt highlighting the black diffuser. The openings emphasize the vehicle’s width, as does the trim strip in matte silver chrome – which reflects the design of the front skirt and frames the AMG sports exhaust system. In contrast to the other M-Class variants, the ML63 AMG features two sets of chrome twin tailpipes, providing that distinctive AMG eight-cylinder sound.
High-quality, sporty interior
Sporty character and premium quality define the interior of the high-performance SUV from AMG. This is evident in the standard designo premium leather AMG power sports seats offering excellent lateral support, as well as the four-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel. The latter ensures excellent vehicle control with perforated leather grips, aluminum shift paddles and a rim flattened on the bottom. Aluminum trim elements and the piano-lacquer retractable cover in the center console highlight the interior’s dynamic and exclusive flair. The standard designo premium leather upholstery includes contrasting double topstitching and AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats.
Dashboard, armrests and door trim are also finished in designo premium leather with double topstitching.
The distinctive instrument cluster with color TFT monitor, AMG welcome logo and AMG main menu is exclusive to the ML63 AMG.
Other standard equipment includes:
The AMG Performance package includes:
The standard designo features on the ML63 AMG include premium leather upholstery on the AMG sports seats.
This is available in a choice of designo auburn brown, designo porcelain and designo black. Features also include AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats as well as velour floor mats with the AMG logo embossed and black designo leather edging.
Further choices include designo trim pieces in black piano lacquer and the designo wood/leather steering wheel in black piano lacquer.
Safety of the very highest caliber
In line with the Mercedes-Benz brand philosophy, the 2012 ML63 AMG is based on the Mercedes-Benz concept of Real Life Safety, derived primarily from what happens in a real accident situation. The extremely robust occupant cell and the front and rear crumple zones form an effective basis for the occupant protection system. Nine airbags, activated on demand in accordance with the nature and severity of the accident, can reduce the loads exerted on the occupants. In addition to active safety systems such as the standard Brake Assist (BAS) or the optional BAS PLUS, which can help to prevent an accident or reduce its severity, the new M-Class features further enhanced passive-safety measures to help protect pedestrians.
Both active safety and driver fitness are improved by assistance systems already familiar primarily from the S- and E-Class. Standard equipment includes the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, the anticipatory safety system PRE-SAFE¨, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, as well as ADAPTIVE BRAKE, the ESP¨electronic stability program and PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist. Further active assistance systems such as Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist are available as additional equipment.
Safety is further enhanced by new standard features such as LED daytime running lamps, fiber-optic / LED tail lamps, Adaptive Highbeam Assist and a driver’s side knee airbag
Visionary – AMG is the inventor of the high-performance SUV
The new ML63 AMG from Mercedes-AMG represents the third generation of the high-performance sport utility vehicle. The company from Affalterbach was the first to identify the potential of powerful and exclusive off-road vehicles and is recognized as the founder of the high-performance SUV segment. It all began in 1999 with the 2000MY ML55 AMG. With a power output of 342 hp, the top-of-the-range M-Class model powered by an AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine achieved a level of performance previously unheard-of in this class, with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds. The unusual combination of high-caliber drive, excellent off-road capabilities, outstanding ride comfort, unparalleled safety and a spacious interior was well-received by AMG customers across the globe. More than 11,000 ML55 AMGs were sold worldwide between 1999 and 2003.
The follow-up ML63 AMG, which was presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2005, continued the success story that began with the ML55 AMG. With its AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine generating an output of 503 hp and 465 lbs-ft of torque, it again set the benchmark in its segment. The performance of the 2007MY ML63 AMG was in the sports-car league. The top-of-the-range AMG model accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and had a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). More than 13,000 units were sold worldwide between 2006 and 2011. In all, AMG’s sales figures for its high-performance SUVs total more than 24,000 to date.
The 2012MY Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG will be launched in Q1 2012.
Mercedes-Benz took to Facebook Thursday to announce the release of the ML63 AMG ahead of its likely debut at the LA Auto Show.

Fitted with a carbon edition exterior package, the ML63 appears uni-coloured: All body parts including new front and rear wheel arches, new side skirts, a rear roof spoiler, and a new front spoiler are covered with exclusive carbon-look foil.
In order to transfer the 540 HP perfectly, the Mercedes-Benz SUV rides on enormous 23 inch bespoke wheels and has an electronic chassis adjustment. On the inside, KICHERER offers a fine interior set in carbon-leather and alcantara.
Seen here is BenzBoost’s take on the future ML63 AMG. We know it is coming as we have posted several groups of spy photos and testing information. Based on their renderings, there are no real surprises in store as the new ML63 AMG will likely have the M157 twin turbo direct injected V8 from the E63 AMG. If this is the case, it will mean 518 horsepower in standard trim and 550 horsepower with the optional performance package. The ML63 AMG’s curb weight should come in just under 5000 pounds. We expect to see an official reveal of the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG at the Frankfurt Auto Show later this year.

Back in 2009, we heard that Mercedes-Benz and AMG had plans to replace its entire engine lineup with a new range of more fuel efficient direct-injected and turbocharged powerplants. A few months later we had official details on one of the most anticipated of the newcomers, a 5.5-liter V-8 that is to replace the 6.2-liter unit found in the current AMG lineup.
It was codenamed M157 and had plans to offer serious power. The new 5.5-liter engine is set to feature direct-injection and twin-turbocharging technologies, this to ensure it produces more power and torque than the current 6.2-liter naturally aspirated mill. Peak output stands at 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, however, an available Performance Pack sees output increased to 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque thanks to additional boost pressure from the turbos.
After news of the engines, spy photos began coming in. And this weekend, the next generation ML AMG SUV was spied again by Motor Authority. Though still heavily covered, we are able to now see the fabricated air intake pipes on the front bumper and air vents on the hood. Thanks to the latest photos, we also get a good look at the large disc brakes at the front and the new AMG wheels, also expected on the next-generation GL AMG SUV. A new bumper and quad exhaust exhaust can be found at the rear.
Almost certain to pick up the performance division’s new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8, the speedy SUV will be called the ML63 AMG and will likely be launched soon after the standard version later this year. The new V-8 engine produces more power and torque than AMG’s current 6.2-liter naturally aspirated mill, with output peaking at 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. However, a likely available Performance Pack should see output increased to 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque thanks to additional boost pressure from the turbos.
Signs that this is most certainly the AMG variant are the oversized cross-drilled brakes and dual exhaust tailpipes. We can expect a slightly lowered ride height as well as a sports tuned suspension.
All we have still have some time to wait before the 2012 Mercedes ML63 AMG makes its official debut, spy photographers have captured photos of the model undergoing a bit of track testing on the infamous Nurburgring. While heavy masking still hides much of the SUV’s styling cues, under the hood we can expect Mercedes-AMG’s new twin-turbo V8 that produces 536 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. There’s also talk of the AMG Performance Package making its way onto the next ML63 AMG, which if true, would boost output to 563 hp (420 kW, 571 PS) and up to 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque.
We’ll keep you posted as new details of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG are released in advance of its likely premier at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. In the meantime, check out more 2011 ML63 AMG spy photos in the gallery below, then head over to World Car Fans for the full article.
From the front, the eye is immediately drawn to the new bonnet with power domes, and the darkened bi-xenon headlamps with active light function. The rear, meanwhile, also contributes appropriately to the new look: the performance SUV now features darkened tail lamps incorporating a clear-lens design and LED technology. The subtle changes to the exterior coordinate perfectly with the high-gloss, chromed front and rear underguard, and afford the ML 63 AMG an even more powerful and distinctive appearance.
Powerful and torque-laden AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine
Still boasting a power output of 375 kW (510 hp) at 6800/rpm as well as 630 Nm of torque, the ML 63 AMG is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and achieves a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). At the renowned International Engine of the Year Awards in 2009, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine took the top places in both the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 litres” categories.
As before, power transfer is taken care of via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with three drive modes. The permanent all-wheel drive is decidedly sporty: the power is split asymmetrically 40:60 between the front and rear wheels to provide optimum agility. The AMG sports suspension, based on the AIRMATIC package with air suspension, adaptive damping system ADS and automatic level control all-round, provides dynamic performance combined with the hallmark Mercedes long-distance comfort. The generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system, which features internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round, ensures short braking distances and optimum resistance to fading.
The ML 63 AMG comes with 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, which are painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with 295/40 R 20 tyres on the front and rear. As an optional extra, titanium-grey-painted, high-sheen twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels fitted with 295/35 R 21 tyres are also available.
High-quality interior with nappa leather upholstery
As usual, the interior of the ML 63 AMG is both functional and high-quality: electrically adjustable AMG sports seats finished in nappa leather upholstery, with Alcantara inserts in the shoulder areas and multicontour function and heating, are complemented by the AMG sports steering wheel with AMG aluminium shift paddles and perforated leather on the specially-shaped grip area. A nappa leather-trimmed dashboard is also available as an optional extra.
The updated ML 63 AMG is available to order with immediate effect and will be delivered to customers from July 2010. It carries a price tag of 105,077 euros (incl. 19% VAT).
Because I know you can’t get enough of the tuning genius that is BRABUS, we’ve got a look at one of the company’s creations for a second straight day – this time, in the form of the ML63 AMG. Outside, the BRABUS ML is fitted with the company’s ML WIDESTAR package, with modifications including a new front apron, front and rear fender flares, door trim, rocker panels and rear apron. Also present is a set of BRABUS Monoblock light alloy wheels, as is a lowered ride height to improve the ML63’s handling characteristics. Inside, BRABUS is back with another very red interior, with highlights including new custom red seating, red door panels and lower dash, new floor mats and red stitching throughout. And last but not least, there’s the power, with BRABUS ML packing a more-than-suitable 650 horsepower. Impressive, to say the least. To see more of the BRABUS ML63 AMG, you can check out more pictures in the photo gallery below.
New spy photos have emerged showcasing the 2012 Mercedes ML63 AMG undergoing a round of testing near the Nurburgring. Unfortunately heavy masking and body panels make viewing the ML’s design elements difficult to discern, to say the least, however a few attributes that at present are known include a double louvre grille, LED headlights and a more upright front end to meet more stringent European pedestrian safety standards. Expect the 2012 M-Class’ wheelbase length to remain similar to that of the current model’s (perhaps a bit shorter in an effort to increase efficiency); also in the ML63 variant, look for AMG’s new twin-turbocharged 5.5-Liter V8 with an output of 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque (an optional Performance Pack could boost output to 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque). The 2012 M-Class is expected to hit the market in the middle of 2011.
We’ll keep you posted as any new details of the 2012 Mercedes ML63 AMG emerge; in the meantime, check out the collection of next-generation M-Class spy photos in the gallery below. Thanks to Motor Trend and Motor Authority for the photos.
BRABUS, purveyors of some of the finest tuning programs in existence, have just released an update for their WIDESTAR M-Class tuning package – one designed specifically for the refreshed new-generation ML. Like its predecessor, the new BRABUS WIDESTAR is roughly five centimeters wider than the a traditional M-Class, the result of which is both a more aggressive stance and improved handling.
To make the BRABUS WIDSTAR what it is, the company’s engineers improved upon a number of key areas: the front apron, the front and rear fender flares, the door trim, the rocker panels and the rear apron. In tandem with these body components, BRABUS also modified the suspension, dropping the ML by some 30 millimeters before adding 23-inch BRABUS forged wheels. Completing the outside package, a BRABUS stainless-steel quad sport exhaust system is present, as is a rear spoiler.
Of course, no BRABUS tuning program is complete without modifications to the engine, and the BRABUS WIDESTAR is no exception. For the top-of-the-line ML63 AMG, BRABUS offers a B63S package, increasing power output to 550 hp (542 bhp / 404.8 kW). For the ML320 CDI, the D6 (III) power kit is available, the result of which is a maximum output of 272 hp (268 bhp / 200 kW). And for the ML500, the BRABUS 6.1 displacement engine has been created, a program that boosts power to 462 hp (456 bhp / 340 kW). There’s engine tuning programs for the rest of the ML family is well, but this at least gives you some idea of what’s available.
And last but not least, should you desire a few additional luxuries inside your BRABUS WIDESTAR M-Class, various functional interior appointments are all at your disposal. An ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel, stainless-steel scuff plates, a multimedia system with 7-inch monitors in the rear headrests – if you desire it, there’s a good chance BRABUS can meet your wishes (for a price, of course). The best part? BRABUS can upgrade any Mercedes M-Class, regardless of model, to WIDESTAR status.
If you’re interested, you can see specifically the various attributes of the BRABUS WIDESTAR Mercedes M-Class in the photo gallery below (click any pic to enlarge). You can also check out the full list of features and available options in the official press, immediately after.
