Mercedes-Benz S300 BlueTEC Hybrid Review

The new Mercedes S-Class is already a byword for luxury and comfort, and now the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid can add class-leading efficiency to that list

The new Mercedes S-Class is already a byword for luxury and comfort, and now the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid can add class-leading efficiency to that list.

It’s the second hybrid in the S-Class range, alongside the S400 Hybrid L, and it’s powered by a 201bhp 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel and a 27bhp electric motor – essentially the same set-up as in the E300 BlueTEC Hybrid. For a car crammed with this much tech and weighing over two tonnes, Mercedes’ claim of 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 120g/km is seriously impressive.

The hybrid squeezes out an extra 10mpg over the 3.0-litre V6 diesel S350, but does add eight-tenths to the 0-62mph time, at 7.6 seconds. Yet the car will still whisper up to the same 155mph. In the S300 the normally gruff four-cylinder diesel is more muted, with virtually no intrusion into the cabin. In fact, if you’re gentle with your right foot you can pull away silently on electric power alone.

Considering the size of the S-Class it handles remarkably well, with light but direct steering and the rear-drive set-up giving the agility of a much smaller car.

As a four-cylinder diesel the S300 Hybrid was never going to be as silky smooth as the S350 V6, but it’s still effortless in its delivery. However, with this powertrain the S-Class loses none of its refinement or road manners, and standard air-suspension makes the ride delightfully supple.

Mercedes has cut no corners when designing the cabin, as is demonstrated by the copious use of leather, wood and aluminium – although our car’s £31,000-worth of options do help. The executive rear seat and comfort packs allow passengers to recline up to 37 degrees while enjoying a soothing massage.

The S300 Hybrid commands around a £2,000 premium over the S350, and you’ll sacrifice a little performance. However, the striking improvement in efficiency should still appeal to even the most well heeled buyer.

Gilded Mercedes-Benz S-Class Fit for a King

Built for China's ultra wealthy, the Carlsson CS50 Versailles is an over the top golden carraige

Can you ever have to much gold?  A question I’m asking myself as I go through the photo gallery of the newly revealed Carlsson CS50 Versailles.  Based on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Carlsson covered the car in more than 1,000 sheets of gold leaf – a process that took over 200 man-hours to complete.  The gold and refinements did not stop there however, Carlsson also covered 278 interior components with gold leaf as well, perfectly complimenting the champagne and dark brown Nappa Leather.

In total, there is around 12,000 Euros worth of gold leaf on the interior and exterior of the S-Class.  Is it to much, did Carlsson take the S-Class meant to invoke the beauty of King Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles too far.  Considering that 10 of the 25 limited edition CS50 Versailles editions have already been spoken for, the answer must be no – it’s the perfect amount of gold.

Check out the photo gallery below and see the gilded ride for yourself, or learn more about the Carlsson CS50 Versailles by expanding the press release below.

One of the world’s most economical V6 diesels is now also available with all-wheel drive: the S 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC develops an output of 190 kW (258 hp) and 620 Nm of torque from a displacement of 2987 cc. With a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (both with short and long wheelbase), it achieves the same level as the preceding four-cylinder model S 250 CDI. The S 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC with the second-generation AdBlue® emission control system costs €84,728 and €90,261.50 respectively.

The S 600 is the new flagship model in the S-Class, available only with a long wheelbase and luxurious appointments. With an output of 390 kW (530 hp), its V12 biturbo engine develops even more output than its predecessor rated at 380 kW (517 hp). The displacement of the engine has increased from 5513 to 5980 cc. Maximum torque is 830 Nm from 1900 rpm. The extensive standard appointments of the S 600 (available from €164,279.50) underline its flagship status. The LED Intelligent Light System, the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with ROAD SURFACE SCAN and the Driving Assistance package Plus all come as standard, for example.

The Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG is the only high-performance 12-cylinder automobile from a German premium manufacturer – and is a car with a pedigree: the first generation of the S 65 AMG was launched in 2003, while the second generation was produced from 2006 until 2013. The new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG once again sets new standards as the most powerful car in this competitive segment. Twelve cylinders, biturbocharging, an output of 463 kW (630 hp) and torque of 1000 Nm ensure outstanding performance and effortless dynamism. Compared with the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by 2.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined). The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL features ROAD SURFACE SCAN as standard. Like the preceding model, the new S 65 AMG is available only with a long wheelbase; the price for Germany (incl. 19% VAT) is €234,906.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

As before in the SL 65 AMG high-performance roadster, AMG combines the 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Unlike in the direct predecessor of the S 65 AMG, which featured an AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission, the seven-speed automatic transmission with its wide ratio spread guarantees a noticeably lower engine speed level. This makes a key contribution to reducing the vehicle’s fuel consumption. The efficiency of the power train is further significantly improved by the fuel-economy converter, reduced-friction bearings and transmission oil heat management.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC has three individual driving programs, which can be selected at the press of a button in the centre console: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). In modes S and M the emphasis is on sportiness: maximum emotive appeal combined with truly perceivable dynamics is ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection during upshifts under full load; this shortens the shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts. The ECO start/stop function is always activated in transmission mode “C”.

2014 S 63 AMG On Display in Frankfurt

The new S 63 AMG is stealing the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful high-performance saloon

The new S 63 AMG is stealing the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful high-performance saloon and most dynamic S-Class ever. At the heart of the new S63 AMG is the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.

And, according to Dr. Schmidt: “Concerns about the environment are not an issue at all. The 5.5-litre V8 biturbo has more power but consumes around one litre less than its predecessor.”  Through systematic lightweight design, the S 63 AMG weighs in at up to 100 kilogrammes less than its predecessor. Fuel consumption is 10.1 to 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The new S 63 AMG is also optionally available for the first time with the performance-oriented AMG 4-MATIC all-wheel drive.

AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 220 pounds lighter than before

Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S63 AMG 4MATIC by up to 220 pounds compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance two-piece brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminum. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fiber, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further 9 pounds. The S63 AMG 4MATIC also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 7.9 lbs/hp, resulting in effortlessly
superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds and the top speed is 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 577 hp and a torque of 664 lb-ft, the AMG eight-cylinder motor from the M157 engine family outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is lower than its predecessor, even though the engine output has been increased by 49 hp.

Technical highlights of the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine:

  • Direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors
  • Twin turbocharging
  • All-aluminum crankcase
  • Four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment
  • Air-to-water intercooler
  • Efficient cooling of engine oil, engine water and transmission oil
  • Lightweight composite oil pan
  • Alternator management
  • ECO Start/Stop function

AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps

The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG 4MATIC has automatic logic controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In “S” (Sport) and
“M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, especially if the driver prefers an agressive driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

Engine production at AMG

Like all AMG engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is assembled by hand at AMG, observing the highest levels of craftsmanship. Highly qualified engine builders assemble the M 157 in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine builder’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 pounds

Following the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is the second AMG high-performance model to replace the conventional starter battery with a lithium-ion battery. The new technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 pounds. The high-performance battery is relatively resilient in cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. The S63 AMG 4MATIC is the world’s first volume-produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented “C” mode the ECO Start/Stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission
characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear, for ensured comfort and efficiency.

In the “S” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO Start/Stop function is deactivated. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The standard performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high-performance driving dynamics and enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive likewise enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces (winter tires are required for winter conditions). Optimum traction is provided by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which exploits the maximum friction connection potential of all four wheels.

The technical basis for the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft
is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 154 pounds, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. The vectoring of torque helps reduce understeer when turning into corners.

AIRMATIC Suspension

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG ADAPTIVE sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. One new feature is the continuous damping adjustment, which can be controlled independently in the compression stage and rebound stage. It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface
conditions. “Comfort” and “Sport” suspension modes can be selected at the push of a button. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC. These measures optimize the vehicle’s agility when driving dynamically. With the redesigned front axle and the special all-wheel-drive set-up, the S63 AMG 4MATIC represents a new dimension in its segment when it comes to driving dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a variable steering ratio is the perfect complement as it greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility whilst maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels stiff steering assistance – which tends to result in better road feel. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback and steering precision.

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

The S63 AMG 4MATIC is available with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength and lowers the unsprung masses, resulting in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG light-alloy wheels – size 8.5×19 at the front and 9.5×19 at the rear with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tires respectively.

Optional extras include AMG forged light-alloy wheels, with size 8.5×20 at the front and 9.5×20 at the rear paired with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The AMG light-alloy wheels feature a high-quality, removeable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport.

AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece brake system as an option for the first time

Extremely short stopping distances and immediate deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance two-piece brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance twopiece brake system is available as an option for the first time. The more than 20
percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 16.5 inches and is recognizable by the “AMG
Carbon Ceramic” logo on the bronze painted brake calipers.

Design: Confidence and exclusivity fused with sensuous forms

Powerful and exclusive, dramatic and prestigious – the new S63 AMG 4MATIC also makes a visual impression. The high-performance sedan’s design is defined by the impressive blend of hallmark Mercedes sensual forms, classic architecture and a sleek silhouette with classic AMG design features. A large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional radiator grille underlines the special status of the S-Class – with an exciting contrast provided by the front apron with three large air dams. The front apron with the grille painted in high-gloss black displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles and emphasizes the exclusivity and power of the S63 AMG 4MATIC. Flics in highgloss black on the side air intakes optimize the flow of air to the cooling
modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport. The threedimensional front splitter in silver shadow reduces lift.

Side sill panels with three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow make the vehicle appear closer to the road and create an aggressive flow along the side with the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line”. Large light-alloy wheels are another trademark AMG feature: they afford a clear view of the AMG highperformance brake system. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in new, contemporary typography on the front fenders identifies the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model. This new lettering also appears in the “S63 AMG” model designation on the trunk lid. The design is drawn to a powerful conclusion by the black diffuser insert with trim in silver shadow and the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with internal dynamic exhaust flaps.

Interior: eye-catching appointments, design and quality

Like the exterior design, the S63 AMG 4MATIC interior is a sophisticated combination of the athletic atmosphere of a true AMG automobile with classic Mercedes values such as improved interior dimensions, new control logic, new ergonomic touches, ease of use, safety, appeal and aesthetics. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electric adjustment, Memory function and
seat heating offer the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Fine nappa leather in AMG V8 design with lavish perforations and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exquisite and luxurious atmosphere on board. Special touches include the embossed emblem on the armrest of the front center console and the high-quality analog clock in IWC design, which for
the first time features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and metal appliqués on the dial.

The AMG sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim, perforated leather in the grip area and aluminum shift paddles allows perfect vehicle control. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the highresolution TFT color display as an AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials: in addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG logo in the speedometer with 200 mph scale (left) and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

Selecting “Warm up” in the AMG main menu brings up two round dials indicating the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures. Vehicle configuration, for example activation of a certain transmission and suspension mode, is manipulated through the AMG main menu “Setup” by means of buttons on the center console. An S63 AMG 4MATIC pictogram on the TFT display between the speedo and rev counter gives the driver visual feedback. The upper section of the display contains a permanent gear indicator and, when manual transmission mode “M” is selected, also an upshift recommendation. At the lower edge, the activated transmission mode, the ESP® mode and the suspension set-up are displayed.

We were all sad when the CL-Class was shelved but after seeing its successor, the all new S-Class Coupe, we can all breath a sigh of relief.  Making its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show today, the S-Class Coupe hasn’t just filled the CL’s shoes, its gone far beyond with improvements all around.

Mercedes S-Class Coupe Concept Interior

Looking completely different from it’s four-door brethren that was revealed earlier this year, the S-Class Coupe Concept has a far more aggressive appearance with sleek new horizontal taillights giving it a sexy appearance. This is a complete departure from the elegant and curvy lines of the S-Class sedan.

The wheel arches have been designed to fit masculine 21-inch wheels fitted on a 2945mm wheelbase. In total, the Mercedes S-Class coupe concept is 5050mm long, 1985mm wide and 1409mm tall. Powering the new Mercedes concept coupe, a V8 4,633cc Biturbo engine that’s capable of producing 455 bhp (339 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft).

Mercedes didn’t just stop at the exterior though, the interior of the S-Class coupe has a modified layout with a white instrument panel and thanks to the new airbag location, a perfectly sculpted instrument panel. A touch screen with four world clocks is located on the center console as well as new white aluminum ventilation nozzles.  Their are two 12.3-inch screens that have an 8:3 aspect ratio, slimmer than what we see on the S-Class Sedan. Not to be overlooked are the aluminum door panels, supple calfskin for the seats and instrument panel, together with a handmade silk carpet and a hand-woven silk roofline.

The new S-Class Coupe also features Intelligent Drive technology that is comprised of two stereo cameras that offer a 3D view of the area up to approximately 50 meters in front of the car with support for object detection and movement. The car’s surroundings are also monitored over a range of up to 500 meters and is capable of detecting surface undulations to help the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension make the necessary changes to avoid a bumpy ride.

The production S-Class Coupe will  debut in January 2014 at the North American International Show in Detroit.

Mercedes S-Class Coupe Renderings

Renderings of the next-generation S-Class Coupe make their way onto the web

For those of you eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new S-Class Coupe, new design sketches have been revealed showing some design insight as to what we can expect from the luxury model.  There’s no word on whether they’re official Mercedes renderings, but judging from past design sketches there’s a good chance they are.

As you’ll see in the photos, the design is significantly more sporty than that of its four door counterpart, with gorgeous new sloping roof line, new tail lights, and a totally redesigned front fascia.  And while design sketches typically tend to be more masculine than the final production car, from the looks of it, this may be the sportiest S-Class Coupe/CL-Class to date.

We’ll keep you posted as new details of the forthcoming S-Class Coupe are revealed in advance of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut (just a few days away); in the meantime, check out more photos of the S-Class Coupe in the gallery below.

2014 Mercedes S-Class by Brabus

German super tuner Brabus transforms the 2014 S-Class into one of the world's fastest luxury sedans

German tuning extraordinaire Brabus has just unveiled their first tuning package for the 2014 S-Class. They’re the first tuner to offer up a power package for the flagship Mercedes, and as usual they don’t dissappoint.

Offering two power packages – one for the S500 and one for the already monsterous S63 AMG – Brabus proved that they can make the best even better.

Brabus Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Brabus Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Brabus B50 (S500) receives a HP boost from its standard 450 HP to an impressive 520 HP – nearly that of the standard S63 AMG. This addition of horsepower and modifications allows Brabus’ version of the S500 to spring from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.2 seconds with a top speed that can be set at 155, 168 or 186 mph.

As for what Brabus had up their sleeves for the Mercedes S63 AMG, Brabus decided on two power upgrades. There’s the Brabus B63 that outputs 650 HP and 1,000 Nm of toque, two figures that are without question impressive, to say the least.  As if that weren’t enough, the second power upgrade (known as the Brabus B73) takes power a step further, upping output to a mind bending 730 hp (yes, I did say 730 HP) along with 1,065 Nm of torque. Both S63 AMG cars with the Brabus power upgrades can reach its electronically limited 202 mph with ease.

Brabus didn’t stop at the engine though, adding additional modifications to the interior and exterior of the 2014 S-Class. Add-ons like a tweaked ABC system with 15mm lowered ride height; 19, 20, or 21-inch Brabus wheels that come in different designs options and colors; a Brabus styling kit; and of course a luxurious interior package with leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber are all on the menu.

Mercedes S-Class Extra Long Wheelbase Spied

Mercedes has confirmed that the S-Class range will be completed by six model variants, based on spy photos will include an extra long wheelbase

We’ve seen the Mercedes S-Class standard wheelbase, the S-Class long wheelbase, for the speed hungry among you, the monstrously powered-yet-luxurious S63 AMG.  But the fun doesn’t stop there, ladies and gentlemen, as there are even more variants of their top of the range Mercedes S coming.

Mercedes has confirmed that the S-Class range will be completed by six model variants, stating “there will be now three new models in addition to the short-wheelbase and extended wheelbase variants and the S-Class Coupe”.  Why so many?  With Maybach gone, Mercedes has opted to seek the same market share of the outgoing brand, and they’ve decided the standard wheel base isn’t going to do it.

In the latest spy photos, we see can see that Mercedes is adding an extra long wheelbase variant to the S-Class lineup.  Unlike the upcoming S-Class Pullman, that will have 6 seats (formed by three rows of two), this new extra-long wheelbase S-Class sticks to the traditional two rear seats, but adds approximately 200mm over the conventional long wheelbase variant.  Think of it as the middle ground between the long wheelbase S-Class and the S-Class Pullman.  Hit the gallery below to see more.
