Most of us would expect to see something along the lines of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van as a safety vehicle, after all, it’s roomy, comfortable and can actually carry medical equipment. Mercedes however, took a different approach to safety by unveiling their latest emergency car in the form of the SLS AMG at the 2011RETTmobil 2011. That’s correct, Mercedes took its gullwing super car, slapped on a few red stickers with “SLS EMERGENCY” lettering, topped it off with a requisite light bar with blue light beams and voila: an EMT’s first responder car with a hand-built engine under the hood.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is inspired by the legendary 300 SL from the 1950s and is powered by an impressive 6.3-liter V8 engine built by AMG and capable to deliver 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Newton metres of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed double clutch transmission in transaxle configuration and propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph). The car features an agile sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbone axles and a combination of high-tech features that guarantees the very highest level of driving dynamics.

And for those who don’t know, the RETTmobil is the industry event for information and training of decision makers and managers of emergency services.
