The stealthy spies over at Road & Track have snapped photos of a heavily camouflaged vehicle making its way around a Mercedes-Benz facility and it looks to be some type of alternative-fuel Mercedes future-mobile.
Just look at that profile—long, low, with a windshield that reaches nearly to the front bumper and a greenhouse that’s completely blended in with the profile of the car. It’s a super-slippery aerodynamic shape, with nary a kink or corner to impede airflow. A lack of doorhandles or side-view mirrors, and the sci-fi chrome window tint, are further hints that this is a concept rather than a production-ready vehicle.
The tires are telling, too: The car wears tiny space-saver donuts that look like they came straight out of the parts bin. Don’t expect those to appear on the final concept, obviously—the fender flares we see under that camo indicate that the rolling stock will probably be significantly bigger.
But tiny, narrow tires, along with that melted cough-drop shape, point to some sort of high-efficiency concept. Mercedes-Benz has long toyed with alternate-fuel vehicles, and this sweeping body over a hybrid, fuel-cell, electric, or other low-consumption/low-emissions drivetrain is all but certain to debut on the upcoming show circuit, whether it’s eco-friendly Los Angeles, or possibly a bigger stage like Geneva.
What futuristic secrets do you think are hiding under that heavily camouflaged silhouette? An EV? A sportscar? A fuel cell vehicle? A fuel economy record car (a la XL1)?
