Team McLaren Mercedes MP4-20 To Test In Interim Orange Livery With Pedro De La Rosa and Gary Paffett

Here's a quick update for all you F1 fanatics.  Garry Paffett and Pedro de la Rosa will be piloting the ridiculously awesome orange MP4-20 you see pictured above prior to the launch of the new Team McLaren Mercedes livery in mid-February.

The orange livery is synonymous with the origins of McLaren, as the team ran its Formula One and CAN-AM racers in the color for a number of years starting with the M5A in 1968...

As we told you earlier, the Detroit Auto Show marked the introduction of four new Mercedes models. In addition to the GL-Class and the S 65 AMG that we've already brought you, Zetsche unveiled two new additional models yesterday:  the Mercedes E 320 BLUETEC and the Vision GL 320 BLUETEC.

If you're unfamilliar with BLUETEC, it's Mercedes' newest diesel technology. According to Dieter Zetsche, CEO of DaimlerChrysler AG:  "As a powerful, economical and clean drive system, BLUETEC can significantly help American drivers continue to enjoy large, powerful cars for many years to come – whether you are looking at large sedans, vans, light trucks or SUVs...

Mercedes-Benz Kwikpower Team In The Dakar Rally With Leader Ellen Lohr Driving A Modified M-Class

Day six of the Dakar Rally just wrapped up, and once again Ellen Lohr and the Kwikpower Mercedes-Benz team have made up ground on their competitors.

After finishing 29th on the 492 mile stage from Tan Tan, Morocco to Zouérat, Mauritania, Lohr and her team have moved into 28th position overall.  According to Ellen Lohr:  “We're absolutely delighted to have moved up to the twenties, in the overall standings – that nearly exceeds our expectations. Our rally prototype runs flawlessly and we are confident to make it to the finish – the coastal city Dakar..."

Mercedes Job Cuts Moving Quicker Than Expected

DaimlerChrysler Black Adn White LogoDaimlerChrysler is reporting today that the previously planned job cuts at the Mercedes Car Group are going better than expected.  Already, approximately 5,000 employess have signed retirement contracts or agreed to leave the company.

The voluntary redundancy program, which aims to reduce the German workforce by 8,500 employees, began in October 2005 and was expected to take 12 months to complete.  According to Günther Fleig, DaimlerChrysler Board of Management Member for Human Resources and Labor Relations Director: “Our expectations have been confirmed. Following this interim status, we continue to consider it realistic that we will successfully achieve the targeted personnel reductions..."

2007 S-Class Makes Official American Debut

As you may or not be aware, yesterday marked the opening of the LA Auto Show (at least for the press), and with it the official introduction of the 2007 S-Class to North America.

To celebrate the event, Mercedes has put out another press release detailing what American buyers can expect from the new S-Class, as well as some additional photos to wet prospective buyer's appetites.  To be honest, there's nothing we haven't already brought you, but stories have been slow lately so I'm going to run the press release anyways, just in case any of you have been living in a cave for the past three months...

MBUSA Records Highest Year On Record

Mercedes-Benz M-Class Top Seller Of The year

Mercedes-Benz USA has reported their highest sales month on record, selling a total of 31,192 units for the month of December.  The increased sales also helped propel MBUSA's annual sales to an all time high of 224,421 units, marking the twelfth consecutive year of sales growth for the company.

According to Paul Halata, president and CEO of MBUSA:  "Marking a dozen years of continuous sales growth in an increasingly challenging and complex market environment is an impressive achievement on the part of our employees and our retail partners whose enthusiasm and commitment to the brand have given us a competitive edge..."

UPDATE 2:  Kwikpower Mercedes-Benz Team In The Dakar Rally

Kwickpower Mercedes-Benz Team Ellen Loh In The Dakar Rally

The Dakar Rally has just wrapped up its fourth stage, and Ellen Lohr and the Kwikpower Mercedes-Benz team had an outstanding performance on the 240 mile journey, making up ground from earlier stages jumping nearly 30 positions in the overall standings.

According to Lohr:  “Today we finally had the chance of proving our car's competitiveness. The 387-kilometre special stage featured gravel tracks, dunes and twisty sections and was both demanding and varied. Despite several perils, my co-pilot, Detlef, delivered a flawless navigation performance and following yesterday's frustrating stage when we drove in the dust clouds of the cars in front of us and didn't have the slightest chance of securing a better result, today's result proves that we are heading in the right direction..."

Interview With Dieter Zetsche

Interview With Daimler Chryslers According to a recent interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Dieter Zetsche, the new CEO of DaimlerChrysler AG, said he wanted to make simpler and faster decision making at the world's fifth biggest automaker.

He further elaborated that he wanted to make sure decisions were not made twice, once at the corporate level and again at the brand level, and added that Mercedes could learn from Chrysler how to be more efficient at production.

Despite previous speculation that the Mercedes Car Group may be cutting up to 8,000 jobs in addition to the 8,500 already planned, Zetsche failed to comment the subject, but during the interview he did point out that "Possibly for certain tasks you need fewer workers..."
