Mercedes has announced today that they'll be investing more than € 600 Million in the company's trucks, buses and components production in Brazil from 2009 to 2011. Already the sales leader in both the Brazilian bus and truck segments with market shares of 50 percent and 31 percent, respectively, the resources will allow Mercedes to further increase capacity at their plant in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, while additional benefits will include the modernization of production processes, the improvement of the logistics system and the increase of the local content rate in the products.
For Mercedes, it was a logical investment. At present, the plant is operating at nearly full capacity, meaning that further sales growth can only be accommodated by eliminating production bottlenecks or expanding manufacturing operations. With the new funds, daily production of the plant will increase by 25 percent, allowing the company to meet the high demand for Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles both in Brazil and export markets while ensuring the plant's competitiveness over the next decade. Additional jobs are also being planned, adding to the 12,000 people already employed at the São Bernardo do Campo location.
According to Gero Herrmann, Head of Mercedes-Benz do Brazil: "Today’s announcement clearly reaffirms our commitment to Brazil."
