With gas prices holding steady at $3.00 plus per gallon, for many, the time to switch to a more fuel-efficient vehicle has arrived.
Although consumers have a number of fuel-saving options to choose from, such as
opting for a smaller vehicle, a number of Japanese hybrids, etc., few options allow drivers to maintain the spaciousness and drive quality found in traditional gasoline-powered automobiles.
One option - the option widely adopted throughout Europe - is to make the switch to a diesel-powered vehicle. Thanks to the latest in diesel technology, the switch, which for many seems insurmountable, is a painless one...

Working for a website, it should come as little surprise that I, quite frankly, am a tech junky. Computers, cell phones, MP3 players... I love all of them.

| DaimlerChrysler Reports A First Quarter Operating Profit Of €891 Million |

Yes ladies and gentlemen, we're back; and to kick things off this morning I'm going to bring you a quick recap of DaimlerChrysler's first quarter earnings report (published yesterday), just in case you missed it.
As a whole, DaimlerChrysler reported an operating profit of €891 million in the first quarter of 2006, compared to €628 million in the first quarter of 2005. Despite the substantial increase in operating profit, DC reported only a modest gain in net income, increasing from €288 million in the first quarter of 2005 to €299 for the first quarter 2006. Earnings per share also noted a modest gain, increasing to €0.29 (compared to €0.28 first quarter 2005)...

| Business Week's Earnings Preview For DaimlerChrysler |

For all you financial types, Business Week has just published an earning's preview for DaimlerChrysler. The article comes in preparation for Daimler's official first quarter earnings report tomorrow.
According to Business Week's preview, analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect DaimlerChrysler to post first-quarter earnings of $1.20 per share.
As for what individual analysts expected to see,
Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas, in a note written to investors, had this to say: "For DaimlerChrysler, while Mercedes results could also provide a positive surprise, this may be tempered by disappointment at Chrysler."

| McLaren Mercedes F1 Team Readies New Engine For Nürburgring |

In an effort to match the performance of current F1 points leader Fernando Alonso and his team's Renault, the McLaren Mercedes team is testing a new engine in Silverstone this week.
According to Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren CEO: "The engine has got to be proved on the track and the dyno, but it is all about pushing." Whitmarsh went on to say that: "On the chassis side as well we have got a few bits of pieces of aero, which we are running at Silverstone, and hopefully those will bring a few tenths (of a second) between them. We are a few tenths behind Renault at the moment, but you also know that when your driver gets close behind a competitor they find a little bit in themselves typically..."

| Is DaimlerChrysler Planning Additional Job Cuts? |

In an article published today, Marketwatch is reporting that DaimlerChrysler may be considering additional job cuts. The article, which is based on an advance copy of Focus-Money magazine, states that in addition to the roughly 15,000 confirmed job cuts, the company may cut an additional 2,500 truck-related jobs and 2,000 management jobs.
In response to the MarketWatch article, Reuters is reporting that the rumors are false, quoting a DaimlerChrysler spokesman as saying, quite bluntly: "This report is absolutely wrong..."

To get things started this morning, the boys over at Inside Line got their hands on a shiny, new Mercedes ML 63 AMG and have published the world's first review of the mega-powered SUV.
The bulk of the review covers engine specifics and technical specifications, so if you want to learn more about the new AMG 6.2-Liter V8, there's of useful information to glean from the article. They also offer a few specifics of how the ML 63 handles, including the fact the 503 horsepower ML prefers to travel in a straight line, which comes as little surprise to anyone that's driven an SUV...

MSN Money published an article today taking a look at the somewhat lackluster sales of the Mercedes R-Class "Grand Sports Tourer."
The article makes mention of the fact that DaimlerChrysler has been forced to offer dealers $5,000 to move the model, although many dealers opt to pass the money directly to consumers. In addition, the article also points out that thanks to the current crop of subsidized lease offers available for the four-wheel drive minivan, the monthly payments on the $48,775 R-Class are lower than several cheaper Mercedes models...

No ladies and gentlemen, your eyes do not deceive you. Car and Driver did in fact "Preview Review" the Mercedes GL 450.
So what exactly is a preview review? To be honest, I'm not really sure. Apparently, it's kind of like a review, only they don't actually drive the vehicle. What the Car and Driver preview review does do is explain the features and options of the GL 450, compare it to other enlarged SUV's, talk about its similarity to other Alabama-produced Mercedes models... you get the idea...

A few weeks ago we told you about an attempt that was being made to form a union at the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The efforts to are being led by the
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who are attempting to unionize after similar efforts by the UAW failed in 1999 and 2000.
Unfortunately for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, UAW isn't supporting the latest unionization attempts. In fact, they've gone as far as filing a complaint claiming they, not a rival union, have the right to organize workers at Mercedes' Alabama location...
